Introducing ActivSkate

We all have an origin story, right? When it comes to who we are, what we’ve achieved, and the values we hold, most of us can trace it back to pivotal moments.

For me, it all started as a rebellious young kid growing up in regional Victoria. In my town, a sense of belonging usually came through mainstream sports, with clubs fostering strong networks and community. But that wasn’t the case for me—and many other young people.

Thankfully, I found my place through skateboarding. Skating brought lifelong friends and a culture that shaped who I am. At 14, though, I was off track. I was fortunate to connect with a local youth worker who gave me advice, agency, and a voice. With their support, I went from a disengaged, marginalized teen to someone actively working to bring people together through skateparks, skate programs, competitions, and events. That was 31 years ago!

Reflecting back, I see how this opportunity marked the start of my journey in volunteering for causes I believed in. Along the way, I met incredible people who provided guidance and leadership, allowing me to travel the world and build a community I’m passionate about.

In December 2023, I was honored to be nominated as President of the Victorian Skateboarding Association. Over the past year, my fellow directors and I have re-envisioned the organization, focusing on people, empowering leadership, and addressing inequity in sports.

Through this work, I’m excited to launch a new chapter in my volunteer journey: **ActivSkate!**

ActivSkate’s mission is to link capital investments in skateparks to real participation and health outcomes. Founded on research and data, ActivSkate delivers strategic plans to guide infrastructure investments in recreational spaces. We work with local communities, partners, and members to build social impact and participation measures, connecting skatepark investments to measurable outcomes.

Our vision is simple: make skateparks the most utilized and cherished recreational space in every community.

But we can’t do it alone—we need your support! Even spreading the word makes a difference. Together, we can inspire greater investment in skateparks and ensure that everyone, in every town and city, has a place to skate.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey—I’m beyond grateful for your encouragement and belief in this mission. 🙏
